How the Intelligent InSites Solution Works
The Intelligent InSites solution integrates real-time location sensing hardware, desktop and PDA applications, a centralized hosting center, and your existing clinical and billing systems to provide a comprehensive real-time location and communication system for use at the point of care.

How it Works

Tags
Small tags are clipped onto staff, residents, and patients that allow the receivers to identify their location. Tags for locating people generally use either ultrasound or dual technology tags - RFID and infrared (IR). The ultrasound and infrared (similar to a television remote control signal) technologies both provide for room-level accuracy, or even sub-room level accuracy, which is important for InSites workflow applications. These tags also include one or two buttons that, when pressed, sends an a signal to issue a notification that assistance is needed.

Assets, such as IV pumps and wheelchairs, are tagged with small IR, ultrasound, or Wi-Fi (802.11) tags. Ultrasound or IR tags are used when room level accuracy is needed. Wi-Fi tags may be used when accuracy requirements of within 10 meters is sufficient. The primary advantage of Wi-Fi tags is they can often use the same wireless network that may already be installed in your facility.

Smaller items, such as pharmaceuticals or implantable items, may be automatically inventoried and their location tracked through smaller "passive RFID" tags that are adhered to the item much like a sticker. Passive RFID tags are typically very inexpensive ($0.25 cents each) and disposable. For some people locating applications, passive RFID wristbands may be an appropriate choice.

Receivers
The receivers work together with the tags to identify the location of a person or item and then send that information back to a central transaction server for processing. The receivers are typically mounted in ceilings or high on walls, but can also be mounted near specific doors ("choke points") or in mobile devices such as PDAs or laptops. The Intelligent InSites solution is very flexible and can work with a variety of different tag and receiver technologies. The data from the receivers may or may not use the same data network in the facility; however, the amount of bandwidth consumed by the system is very small.

Transaction Server
Within the facility, the data is initially collected at a central "transaction server". This server is usually placed in a cabling room or closet, but may be located in an IT hosting area. The server provides the logic that determines the location of the tagged items, as well as some simple logic via a location rules engine that is then passed along to the hosting center where the majority of the advanced workflow and rules processing logic takes place.

If the Internet connection from the transaction server to the hosting center is lost, the transaction server provides a backup system to ensure all alerts, including assistance requests from badge presses, and all location data continues to operate. Once the Internet connection is restored, all the queued up data is then processed at the hosting center as it normally would. This ensures the system remains available to staff and patients/residents at all times and the integrity of the InSites reports is maintained.

In addition to providing the initial processing of the data, the transaction server integrates the location data with other building systems, such as corridor lights, door locks, security systems, audible alarms, temperature sensors, and more.

InSites Hosting Center
The Intelligent InSites solution is offered with a flexible deployment model – either as a fully hosted solution at our world-class hosting center, or hosted by your IT department. For organizations with limited IT staff, using our hosting center has many advantages. There is no need to worry about server hardware breaking down, data being lost, backups being completed and stored off-site, or installing new releases. We take care of it all for you. In fact, every time you log into the system via desktop computer, laptop, or PDA, you will always be running the very latest available software.

For organizations with multiple sites, the central hosting center will aggregate the information from all your sites and allow you to view the status of any location in real-time, compare the performance of facilities to one another, and be able to see the same screens in your facility at anytime from anywhere in the world.

Third-Party Applications
Although the Intelligent InSites solution works well as a stand-alone system, it has been designed to integrate seamlessly with your clinical and billing systems to streamline workflow – not disrupt it. Tasks, such as “administer a medication” or “take a blood pressure reading,” can flow from your clinical system (or a manual request by staff) through the InSites system and on to the appropriate care provider's PDA. An acknowledgement can then be sent back to the clinical system along with additional information, such as the result of the blood pressure reading.

In addition, InSite's voice capabilities allow you to quickly send detailed care directives to another staff member, or you can dictate into the PDA directly and have it automatically entered into a patient/resident's health record. Also, the InSites system can capture ancillary charges that may have otherwise been missed or not documented and have those flow into your billing system, increasing your reimbursements. These are merely just a few examples of how the power of the Intelligent InSites’ solution can be applied.

Healthcare Provider Tools
Staff can interact with the Intelligent InSites solution through a variety of tools – desktop/laptop systems, PDAs, tablet PCs, email, pagers, and more. Patients can interact through their badge buttons, traditional nurse call pull cords, or wall mounted push buttons or pull strings.

Because the InSites applications are completely web-based and hosted via the Internet at our hosting center, you can access the systems at anytime from anywhere and be assured you are getting the same real-time information as you would within the facility. Check in on the night shift activities while at home or receive a notification of an escalated incident while traveling on business. Whatever your reason, the Insites solution has been designed to be as flexible as you need it to be.
