Long-Term Care Facility Realizes 25% Gain in Productivity
Using Real-Time Location Solution from Intelligent InSites

Sprucedale Care Centre, a 96-bed skilled nursing facility located in Strathroy, Ontario, today announced they have seen staff productivity increase an equivalent of two hours for every employee shift since installing the InSites Enterprise Visibility Platform eighteen months ago. The Intelligent InSites solution enables Sprucedale caregivers to quickly identify and locate staff and residents as well as equipment through the use of small pendants, equipment tags, and location monitoring sensors installed throughout the facility. Less time is spent locating staff, residents, and equipment leaving more time to focus on resident care.
“Sprucedale has seen a 25% increase in staff productivity since adopting the Intelligent InSites solution in 2006. By quickly locating equipment, other staff and residents, we save time each day,” said Darren Micallef, Sprucedale Care Centre Administrator. “We determined the average time savings on repetitive tasks, such as locating a resident to provide them with their medication or finding commonly used equipment such as a bed lift, and then multiplied that by the average number of times the staff does those tasks each shift. The savings are significant and measurable.”
The comprehensive solution serves as Sprucedale’s wireless nurse call, wander prevention, communications system, and mobile alerting system. Residents are able to roam freely throughout the facility knowing if they need assistance, they simply press the button on their pendant and Sprucedale staff is immediately alerted to the name, photo, and location of the resident making the request. Should a resident with Alzheimer’s wander from the facility, the staff is notified immediately via their handheld PDA. These features promote the independence of the residents while ensuring their safety.
Sprucedale also implemented Intelligent InSites’ handheld PDA applications instead of pagers, allowing staff members to communicate directly with one another via voice or text, saving staff more time. This allows specific information or needs to be sent and received among the staff throughout the day and throughout the facility. “The system has solidified our communications,” says Micallef. “My staff members know their messages have been received. And in the case of an emergency, they can communicate exactly what is needed without leaving the resident, or instantly escalate an alert if necessary.”
Another innovative feature of the system is the unique way Intelligent InSites is able to provide support to customers like Sprucedale. If staff members have a problem or a question, they simply touch the InSites Support button and speak their issue into the PDA. Shortly thereafter, they receive a response directly from an Intelligent InSites support representative. “My staff doesn’t miss a beat when they have an issue. It takes them only 20-30 seconds to communicate their issue directly to the Intelligent InSites support team, and they are back to work. It’s pretty impressive how that works!” added Micallef.
