doug_burgum_photo Doug Burgum – Interim President and CEO
Doug’s professional career began in the early ’80s when he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in its Chicago office. In 1983, he returned to his native North Dakota and literally “bet the family farm” when he provided the seed capital for Great Plains—then a very small startup company in the fledgling PC software industry. Shortly thereafter he became the company’s chairman and CEO. Driven by a strong vision and powerful dream, he led Great Plains to a worldwide presence and its impressive initial public offering in 1997.

Recognizing and respecting Great Plains’ leadership position in the business applications software market, Microsoft Corporation acquired the company in 2001 for $1.1 billion. At the time, it was the largest acquisition Microsoft had ever completed.

Doug currently serves as chairman of the board of SuccessFactors, the global leader in business execution software that improves business alignment, team execution and people performance to drive results for companies of all sizes. He serves as founder and chairman of Kilbourne Group, a company committed to inspiring and supporting the redevelopment of downtown Fargo. As co-founder and chairman of Arthur Ventures, he is actively involved in the venture capital fund’s investments in AltraVax, a bio-pharmaceutical company using next-generation technology for vaccine development, as well as in Intelligent InSites.

He was the largest initial outside seed investor in Take Care Health Systems (now known as Take Care Clinic), a startup company that changed the healthcare landscape. Formed in February 2006, Take Care Health Systems was acquired by Walgreens in May 2007.

Doug holds a Bachelor of University Studies degree from North Dakota State University. He also holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and serves on the school’s advisory council. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from NDSU (2000) and the University of Mary (2006).
