whaleI’ve heard that, in the gambling industry, casinos refer to their big-spending, gambling-crazy high-rollers as “whales.” These wealthy gamblers spend (or should I say, “lose”) a significant amount of money when they visit a casino, and certain casinos target these “whales” as a means to boost their annual net income.

As you look to implement an enterprise-wide RTLS solution for asset management, which assets should you be targeting? Which assets are your “whales”—the assets that have the biggest impact on your bottom-line?

As part of our RTLS+ solution implementation process, our team will work with your hospital, and your actual equipment data, to help you determine the set of assets you should manage with your Intelligent InSites RTLS solution, including a prioritization of assets given your particular goals and requirements.

There are many different criteria for determining which assets to track and manage with RTLS, including shrinkage reduction, patient safety, compliance, and the reduction of non-value-added (NVA) time.

When talking about the “whales” of asset management, however, it is almost always either inventory “right-sizing” or rentals reduction that promotes a particular equipment category into the Top 5 “Must Track Items” list.

Based on our experience across multiple enterprise-wide RTLS solution implementations, utilizing our RTLS+ process for calculating, monitoring, reporting, and managing hard-dollar ROI, here is a typical Top 5 list of the “whales” of RTLS asset management:

1. Infusion Pumps
2. Ventilators
3. Pulse Oximeters
4. Stretchers
5. Telemetry Transmitters

There were several other equipment categories that just missed the cut, including wheelchairs, bladder scanners, Bi-Paps, and Dinamaps…

By tagging Top 5 “Must Track Items” (or “whales,” if you’d like), and using an enterprise-wide RTLS asset management solution to optimize your inventory and your equipment processes, you will see substantial hard-dollar cost savings and a significant improvement in your bottom-line.

If you have any questions or comments, please write more below. And, if you are interested in signing up for an RTLS+ Value Analysis to find your own “whales,” definitely let us know!

Sincerely,
Marcus Ruark, Vice President

RTLS and RFID in hospitalsAccording to Mike Miliard, Managing Editor at Healthcare IT News magazine, “One of the most intriguing areas at HIMSS12 […] was the Intelligent Hospital Pavilion. Presented in partnership with the RFID in Healthcare Consortium, HIMSS’ walk-through mock-up offered an up-close look at the myriad ways radio-frequency identification (RFID), real-time location system (RTLS), sensor and wireless technologies can optimize inventory management, improve patient safety, streamline clinical workflow and more.”

Mike’s recent Healthcare IT News article, entitled “Slowly, ‘smart hospitals’ on the rise,” also includes a notable comment from Mohammed Maghazil, head of applications and IT affairs at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia:

“With the potential to reduce medical errors, optimize business processes, improve quality and accuracy (and therefore accountability) and enable long-term cost-effectiveness, RFID and RTLS are hardly ‘a luxury.’ Before long, they’ll be a must-have.”

Given the wide range of healthcare processes, workflows, and use cases that can be dramatically improved with RTLS, it’s no surprise that RTLS and RFID solutions are heading into the “must-have” category of healthcare IT.

I welcome your feedback regarding the future of RTLS in healthcare!

Sincerely,

InSites solutions works with any RTLSYesterday I attended Frost & Sullivan’s Analyst Briefing “RTLS – How it’s Bringing Value to the Business.” During the webinar, Nandini Bhattacharya, Senior Research Analyst at Frost & Sullivan, was reviewing the changing RTLS technology landscape across the world. Specifically, she focused on how RTLS is bringing value to vertical markets such as healthcare, defense, logistics and supply chain.

In her presentation she pointed out the increasing demand for patient safety and security, motivating hospitals and pharmaceutical companies to adopt RTLS for patient tracking and monitoring, medical devices locating, and drug tracking and monitoring.

An interesting point that she made during her briefing was the importance of choosing a robust, interoperable, and scalable RTLS software solution.

According to Frost & Sullivan’s Bhattacharya, hospitals need to increase the scope of RTLS projects (i.e., go beyond basic asset tracking), and they have to do business expansions and deploy RTLS technologies to more areas (e.g., patient flow, supply chain, etc.).

She emphasized that if the RTLS software is robust, highly scalable, and innovative, it will support further business expansion beyond original use case.

At Intelligent InSites we fully support this statement. Indeed, our entire enterprise real-time location systems (RTLS) software solution was architected, from the beginning, with the premise to provide healthcare organizations with innovative RTLS solutions that are highly scalable, can serve multiple uses cases, and that integrate with multiple technologies

Let’s dive in into each of these attributes:

Serving Multiple Use Cases
The Intelligent InSites solution was designed with flexibility in mind, so it can be used for scores of applications and processes, thereby increasing the ongoing value and improving the return on investment. Here are just some of the use cases the InSites solution can help with: asset tracking and asset management, patient flow, temperature monitoring, business intelligence, infection control, and many more.

Highly Scalable
With its advanced open architecture, the InSites solution can scale from a small stand-alone facility to a large, distributed integrated delivery network (IDN) with virtually an unlimited number of devices, millions of square feet, unlimited users, and unlimited expansion capabilities.

Integration-Ready
With an extensive array of integration interfaces and connectors, the Intelligent InSites solution works seamlessly with 3rd-party software solutions, such as Electronic Health Records (EHR), OR scheduling systems, asset management systems, and other clinical systems. The InSites solution also offers integration to an array of mobile communication systems, including iPhones, iPads, PDAs, Vocera phones, and pagers, as well as a hard-wired digital I/O interface for building systems.

It is very encouraging to see that RTLS market analysts confirm the importance of our strategy: focusing on providing our healthcare customers with the most flexible, open, scalable enterprise RTLS software to achieve enterprise-wide RTLS success.

Sincerely,

caring for patientI’d like to share an insightful article by Timothy R. Zoph, Senior VP and CIO at Northwestern Memorial HealthCare Chicago, entitled “IT Leadership: A Look Ahead.”

It is great to see healthcare executives start realizing the true value of technology. As Zoph puts it: “We are moving beyond task-oriented technology implementation, such as obtaining meaningful use incentives, and are beginning to realize the true value of technology in terms of measurable returns in productivity, cost, and patient outcomes.”

I could not agree more!

A great example of successful transition from task-oriented technology approach to outcomes-based approach is the use of Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) by healthcare organizations.

Not too long ago, when hospitals were thinking about deploying an RTLS solution, their main point of discussion was selecting the specific locating technology (e.g. “Should we use Wi-Fi or ZigBee?”).

Now, when we talk to healthcare executives about RTLS, they want to know how this technology will improve their patient flow, optimize capacity, increase asset utilization, reduce rentals, and improve their overall healthcare efficiency.

It’s extremely encouraging to see this transition, as this is exactly what our solution delivers.

By way of example, let’s talk about the classic use of RTLS to find your “stuff.”

If a healthcare organization is using RTLS solution merely to find their equipment faster (a “task-oriented approach”), such an organization would be missing out on the tremendous opportunity of RTLS to achieve transformational process improvements.

However, if the hospital is looking at RTLS technology from a value perspective (i.e., how much more time will nurses be able to spend at the patient bedside, how can equipment processes and inventories by optimized, how can capacity management be improved) the hospital can truly change the way they operate and achieve measurable hard-dollar cost savings—all while improving patient satisfaction and patient care.

We look forward to these exciting changes ahead as healthcare organizations fully adopt a value-driven technology approach.

Sincerely,

When it comes to solving patient flow issues and improving capacity management – it helps to look at things from a system perspective and assess the role of people, technology, and processes in driving improved patient flow.

Let’s start with PEOPLE.
There is no doubt that any change in patient flow requires the cooperation of medical personnel, ancillary staff, and patients. Keeping patient needs first will help you determine the most critical issues, such as long wait times or insufficient communication with patients’ loved-ones regarding the progress of care.
With a patient-centered focus, you can evaluate possible technologies that help address patient flow issues (think – how we can improve our HCAHPS). As a nurse, I see Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) as the most effective technology to help us solve this problem.

Technology Aspect.
An RTLS solution gives you a real-time view of what is happening in your facility–freeing care providers from the time-consuming tasks of searching for patients and available rooms or equipment. This allows your staff to focus on the important task of caring for patient. Plus, with the communication capabilities of enterprise RTLS systems, you can effortlessly keep patient families informed (via mobile device or electronic display board) about the current status of their loved one.

Start with the end in mind.
Process improvement begins with recognition of the causes of patient flow problems and a willingness to make appropriate changes. To be successful, we need to specify our desired outcomes, consider all the process changes that need to take place, and obtain agreement for such changes from all constituencies affected by the process change.

With a well-defined plan, we can then initiate the changes and evaluate their true impact on patient flow. Understanding the actual impact on patient flow, with accurate measurements and metrics, is only possible by utilizing RTLS. An RTLS solution will provide you with various KPIs, such us door-to-triage, door-to-doc, or door-to-admit. Better yet, this data is automatically collected, so you can be assured about its accuracy and timeliness, and staff does not need to spend valuable time with manual data entry.

To help you visualize how patient flow improvements can be achieved with the use of RTLS solutions – we invite you to attend our upcoming webinar. On March 21, 2012, at noon CT – Mary Jagim, Intelligent InSites’ CNO and Lean Healthcare Green Belt, will talk about how RTLS can improve your hospital work flow and provide a better experience for the patient. She will share real-life examples of how RTLS technology can ensure smooth progression of patient care and streamlined handoffs as patients move throughout the hospital.

If you, or someone in your organization, would like to attend the “Improving patient flow with RTLS/RFID Solutions” webinar, please register by visiting http://www.intelligentinsites.com/resources/webinars.html.

We look forward to sharing insights on how to make healthcare more efficient, without cutting corners!
