RTLS and RFID tagsThe RTLS market develops at an extraordinary pace. Each week we hear new announcements from the RTLS hardware vendors about their newest, better, faster, cheaper, smaller tags, or improved means of location triangulation, or even entirely new approaches to tracking assets and people. It’s safe to say that the “hardware” aspect of RTLS is constantly changing and constantly evolving, whether from innovation, acquisition, pricing, business models, intellectual property issues, etc.

The best way to take advantage of this change (or, perhaps, to mitigate the potential risks of this change) is to leverage an enterprise RTLS software solution that works with any RTLS hardware. The InSites RTLS software solution is integrated with multiple RTLS hardware technologies, including Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi plus infrared, Wi-Fi plus ultrasound, active RFID, infrared/RF, passive RFID, ultrasound, and ZigBee.

Just in the last few months we have expanded the portfolio of RTLS hardware that works with our enterprise healthcare RTLS software, including:
- a hybrid RFID and ultrasound technology from TempSys,
- an active RFID-based solution from Cadi Scientific,
- an active RFID-based solution from RF Code,
- passive RFID technology from ThingMagic,
- and a real-time location technology based on the IEEE ZigBee standard 802.15.4 from Proxense.

These are in addition to our existing integrations with RTLS hardware from vendors such as Aeroscout, Awarepoint, CenTrak, Ekahau, Sonitor, and Versus.

Our open RTLS software solution represents a unique value proposition for hospitals planning to invest in RTLS technology: a single RTLS software solution that works with multiple real-time locating technologies. This enables hospitals to select the RTLS technology that best meets their current requirements, infrastructure, and budget, while providing a future-proof foundation for additional use cases, technologies, innovations, and requirements over time.

Thus, as new and better hardware solutions emerge, you can switch your underlying RTLS technology without impacting your users, your work flows, and your many years’ worth of RTLS data and “business intelligence” capabilities. Here’s an analogy I heard recently on this subject: every time you upgrade your laptop to get the latest PC hardware, you shouldn’t have to lose your files or learn an entirely new spreadsheet program!

So if you want to make a smart investment in RTLS, start by choosing the RTLS solution that can work with each and every RTLS hardware.

And, if you would like to discuss our objective experiences on how each RTLS hardware technology might match up with your specific use cases, please let us know!

Sincerely,
Marcus Ruark, Vice President

DFW HIMSSLast week we had the privilege of attending the CIO Lunch organized by the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (DFW HIMSS), where some of the best CIOs in the country shared their key strategies for 2012-2013.

Among them was Ed Marx – CIO of Texas Health Resources (THR). Mr. Marx has pointed out that the #1 strategy for his organization is leveraging the power of Business Intelligence and Analytics, especially for predictive modeling.

This is very exciting news for us, given our goal to empower users of RTLS and RFID systems to leverage all of their real-world real-time data to produce actionable insights critical to making sound and timely decisions.

As Clint Abernathy, Administrative Director of Operations at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas (a THR hospital) told us, “With the Intelligent InSites RTLS Business Intelligence solution, we gain the ability to support information-driven decision-making, allowing us to improve operational processes across our healthcare enterprise.

We are proud to support our healthcare customers in their vision of harnessing the immense intelligence contained within their clinical and operational information systems.

Sincerely,
Marcus Ruark, Vice President

Applying Lean Principles in HealthcareI couldn’t be more excited about our upcoming webinar on applying lean principles in healthcare. Why? Because I remember how much time I lost on tasks that I considered a waste: searching for a lift to transfer a patient, locating another staff member who could assist me with that task, or simply documenting that I went to a patient room.

As healthcare staff, we are here to care for patients. Every task that slows us down means less time we can spend with our patients, and less time providing quality care. Fortunately, technologies such as Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS) can help hospitals eliminate process inefficiencies.

During the lean and RTLS webinar that will take place this Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at noon CST, you will be able to learn about the synergies between lean and RTLS, presented by Intelligent InSites’ CNO and lean healthcare Green Belt, Mary Jagim. Mary will talk about how RTLS can provide healthcare organizations with enterprise-wide visibility into their operations, enabling them to make significant improvements in workflow, cost, and quality.

As Mary puts it, “Although quality and performance improvement have been areas of focus in hospitals over the years, operational excellence, breakthrough process redesign, and establishing organization-wide cultures of change have become strategic imperatives throughout healthcare. By leveraging high-impact synergies between RTLS solutions and lean healthcare principles, we can enhance lean initiatives and deliver continuous process improvements.”

If you, or someone in your organization, would like to attend the “RTLS and Lean Healthcare: How to Improve Care and Reduce Cost” webinar, please register by visiting http://www.intelligentinsites.com/resources/webinars.html.

We look forward to sharing the insights on how to make healthcare more efficient!

HIStalkHIStalk was recently interested in exploring where HIT vendors were planning to invest their research and development dollars over the next 1-2 years. You can see all of the responses on the HISTalk site, but we’d like to share with you a response from our own President and CEO, Doug Burgum:

“In our pursuit of improving care while lowering costs, we’ll be investing in three primary areas in the next 1-2 years.

First, one of Intelligent InSites’ most important objectives is to improve caregivers’ ability to spend more time at the patient bedside. To this end, we’ll be continuing our R&D investment in automating non-value-added manual tasks—including EHR data entry and finding available, clean equipment through easy-to-use applications—to give caregivers more time to spend with patients.

Second, as our solution utilizes RTLS and RFID technologies to know the location, status, condition, and interaction of all tracked equipment, patients, and staff throughout the hospital, we collect a massive quantity of operational data, every minute, every day, month after month, year after year. Through our Business Intelligence solution, we help our customers harness this “Big Data” to produce actionable insights critical to making sound and timely decisions, by utilizing flexible, high-impact, easy to create reports.

Third, because real-time data is generated from a wide variety of data sources, and because real-time intelligence can empower multiple healthcare IT systems, we’ll be continuing our investment in our partner ecosystem. We will continue to integrate with the expanding set of RTLS hardware vendors, and we’ll continue to expand our interfaces with EHR solutions, communications platforms, asset management applications, building management systems, and nurse call systems.

We are excited about investing in the future of RTLS, the “magic” of enterprise RTLS software, and helping our customers to truly improve the care they deliver, while simultaneously lowering their costs.”

Happy New Year!
